One of our favourite starting-points is the nature reserve of the Giara di Gesturi, an area of wild and unspoiled beauty little more than an hour’s drive to the southeast. The Giara is a vast basalt plateau bounded by steep walls and peppered with seasonal ponds. The nature reserve boasts luxuriant woods of cork, downy and holm oaks, as well as olive trees and Mediterranean brush. It is also renowned as the habitat of the “small horse of the Giara”, the only herd of wild horses in Italy, or indeed in Europe. Strong, calm, and the size of a pony, they are nevertheless considered to be a true horse, though their origin is still unexplained.
Our Reception is always happy to make suggestions for walking, hiking, and cycling, and of course we can arrange bicycle hire.
